TourBus Concert Series: Jameel Stephens Trio
A Southside Chicago native, Jameel Stephens began playing drums at the age of 2, first using pots, pans, and spoons as a makeshift kit. By 5, he was playing in church, learning by ear from watching older musicians. Though he was more passionate about sports growing up, music was always present whether at pep rallies or in school bands. Jameel attended Benedictine University on a football scholarship while majoring in music education, eventually transferring to Illinois State University where he shifted his focus to Music Business and Jazz Studies after realizing his passion was in playing not teaching. Recognized by professors as “a workable talent” he began taking formal drum lessons to compliment his natural gift, working his way from entry level jazz groups to becoming the top drummer in every elite jazz band on campus while earning his Masters degree in jazz performance.
