McLean County Arts Center to Unveil Community Mural
Bloomington, IL – The McLean County Arts Center (MCAC) invites the public to a Community Self-Portrait Mural Unveiling Celebration on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the front entrance of the Arts Center, located at 601 N. East St., Bloomington, IL.
This free, family-friendly event marks a major milestone in MCAC’s most ambitious community art initiative to date – an expansive outdoor mural composed of hundreds of individual, greyscale self-portraits created by residents across McLean, Livingston, and Logan counties.
While the full mural installation is still in progress, a significant portion will be revealed for the first time during the celebration.
The mural is the result of months of collaborative work through public art workshops, take-home kits, and community outreach events. Funded in part by the Illinois Arts Council, the project aims to empower local creatives and celebrate community identity, encouraging residents to see themselves as both artists and integral members of the cultural landscape.
It’s not too late to participate. Community members of all artistic skill levels are still invited to create a self-portrait. Kits are available at the Arts Center during open hours.
