6:00pm- Pre Movie Presentation will include Bobbie Horton Therault – daughter of Gamma Phi Circus founder Clifford “Pop” Horton – will talk about her experience growing up with the circus in Normal. After her remarks, she will be joined by Tino Wallenda of The Flying Wallendas for an audience Q & A
7:00pm- The Greatest Show on Earth is a dazzling spectacle of life behind the scenes with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, the best three-ring circus in the land. Celebrates the extravagant three-ring circus and depicts the passionate scenes of love and jealousy behind the greatest show on Earth.
This 1952 American drama film is produced and directed by Cecil B. DeMille and shot in Technicolor. The film stars Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde as trapeze artists competing for the center ring, and Charlton Heston as the circus manager running the show. James Stewart also stars as a mysterious clown who never removes his make-up, even between shows, while Dorothy Lamour and Gloria Grahame play supporting roles. In addition to the film actors, the real Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s Circus’ 1951 troupe appears in the film, with its complement of 1,400 people, hundreds of animals and 60 carloads of equipment and tents.
The film won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Story, and was nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Director and Best Film Editing. It also won Golden Globe Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Director and Best Motion Picture – Drama. Adjusted for inflation, the film’s box office is among the highest-grossing films in the United States and Canada.
