Lunch and Learn: Science Fiction made into Science Reality with Ames Professor of Physics Gabe Spalding
Thu Jan 12 12:10:00 2017
12:10-12:40 p.m.
Enjoy a few videos illustrating how we’ve turned some of the fantasies of science fiction into experimental realities. For example, we’ve now made holograms that don’t just look three-dimensional, they cause nearby nano-components to self-assemble into place, providing real three-dimensional substance to the structures. Following Star Trek, we call this “The Holodeck.” We’ve also made functional “Tractor Beams” and “Sonic Screwdrivers” and have even experimentally produced a movie of something that, in a basic sense, is traveling backwards in time.
Bring your brown bag lunch to the Museum’s series, featuring engaging and enlightening topics for discussion. Join us the second Thursday of every month from September through May for a new topic to explore and discuss. The programs are held in the Museum’s Governor Fifer Courtroom from 12:10-12:40 p.m. These programs are free and open to the public and sponsored by Illinois Wesleyan University, the McLean County Museum of History, and the Collaborative Solutions Institute.
