Lunch and Learn: The History of Farming in the Great Corn Belt with Don Meyer
Thu Dec 14 12:10:00 2017
Nearly two hundred years have passed since the earliest settlers began to arrive in McLean county and during that period, we have sen the settlement of the land and the conversion of swamplands and adoption of scientific advances to provide us with some of the highest rated agricultural soils in the world. Farmers have survived the challenges of nature’s forces, economic hardships, and inter-generational transfers of land, and have specialized into the corn and bean “breadbasket” for the world. today with the introduction of technologies and the interdependence with argribusiness, less than 2% of the US population remains on the highly efficient farms. Join us as we look at the challenges, choices, and changes that have been an integral part of McLean County farming History.
