Winner of the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, and the 1995-1996 Obie Award for its score, Floyd Collins has been described as the first great post-Sondheim musical, with Stephen Sondheim himself calling composer Adam Guettel’s music, “dazzling.” Guettel’s unique musical style is drawn from bluegrass, Americana and more complex musical forms that have their roots in the likes of Bartok and Stravinsky. The book, by Steppenwolf’s Tina Landau, was inspired by the real Floyd Collins, a Kentuckian who descended into the great Sand Cave during the winter of 1925 in search of fame and fortune.
