TAP at Illinois State University was established in 2007 as part of the statewide network of support provided under The Autism Program of Illinois. At the beginning of 2015, the service network consisted of 17 partners and 19 locations. Due to state budget uncertainty, several locations have close. TAP at ISU was in danger of closing until parents stepped forward, formed Friends of TAP and secured an off-campus location to hold TAP services at Milestones Early Learning Center in Bloomington.
Locally, TAP at Illinois State University serves more than 100 families in McLean County and the surrounding areas. Critical services provided by TAP include intervention for children and their families, consultation with schools and families, training to professionals and parents, and evaluation of intervention effectiveness. In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control reported that as many as 1 in 68 children could have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Many of the services offered by TAP cannot be obtained through other avenues.
The Friends of The Autism Place is a nonprofit organization. Its mission is to support the advancement of Autism awareness/education, through financial support and community outreach on behalf of The Autism Place at Illinois State University.
