BYE BYE BIRDIE is one of the most captivating full-family musicals of our time. It tells the story of a rock and roll singer named Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley type, who is about to be inducted into the army. Albert Peterson, his agent, is a very pleasant and mild mannered young man. Albert is driven forward by his faithful secretary Rosie Alvarez who concocts one final national publicity plan before Conrad’s induction.
Performing his song, One Last Kiss, the stunt calls for Conrad to bid a typical American teen-age girl goodbye with an all-American kiss on the national variety television program, The Ed Sullivan Show. Kim MacAfee, a high school girl in Sweet Apple, Ohio wins the honor with the musical centering on the comedic chaos that ensues. Other hit songs in this affectionate satire include
“An English Teacher,” “What Did I Ever See in Him?,” “Put on a Happy Face,” “One Boy,” “A Lot of Livin’ to Do,” “Kids,” “Rosie” and “Spanish Rose.” BYE BYE BIRDIE is an American musical classic that is as much fun to perform as it is to watch.
This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and the McLean County Arts Center.
