Bobbin-Lace Makers Demonstration
Thu Nov 19 13:00:00 2015
An ancient art, bobbin lace making dates back further than the 14th century. The art is practiced in many countries.Belgium, Ireland, France, to name a few , have kept this tradition alive in Europe.A group of artisans in McLean County, Bobbin-Lace Makers of Central Illinois are hoping to generate more interest here in the U.S., and will be conduction on demonstrations at the McLean County Museum of History in the Textiles room on the third floor on Thursday, November19, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Bobbin lace is produced by twisting, weaving and braiding of multiple threads attached to bobbins, sometimes one hundred or more at a time.In the past few decades an effort to revive the art has produced patterns, many directly traced from antique laces. Many of the designs are a combination of geometrical and floral patterns. Working diagrams can now be found in books with step by step instructions.Lace guilds, informal groups, and even lace retreats and conventions are becoming popular. There is even an International Organization of Lace.
