BN Communities

In addition to the twin cities of Bloomington and Normal, McLean County is home to a number of smaller communities, ranging in size from just over a hundred inhabitants to four thousand. Many of these towns and villages were founded in the 1880s when the Illinois Central Railroad was built, and today they offer a warm small town welcome to visitors.

Family fun and community celebrations

Explore the country communities in BN, and enjoy celebrations like the Chenoa 4th of July Celebration, Le Roy’s annual Backyard BBQ Contest, Lexington’s Art in the Park, Stanford’s Good Old Days, and Towanda’s annual Spaghetti Supper, which has been running for 21 years!

Route 66

The most famous road in America passes through BN, and the Illinois Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor Festival takes place annually on the first weekend of May, sponsored by twelve local communities along the road, including Chenoa, Lexington and Towanda.

Local attractions

Discover fun local attractions. Stop off for a burger at Dixie Truckers Home in McLean, the oldest truck stop in America, filled with Route 66 memorabilia. Make an appointment to visit the Funks Prairie Home & Gem Museum near Shirley, the 1864 residence of Illinois State Senator and cattle-king, Lafayette Funk. Or pause for a stroll along the trails at the Sugar Grove Nature Center just south of Funk’s Grove, the largest remaining intact prairie grove in Illinois.

Visit our guide to museums and attractions, and our guide to outdoor activities and attractions for more ideas on things to see and do in the communities of BN.
